Why it matters
It's the scoreboard for GEO. Classic SEO has rankings and clicks. AI answers don't have positions in the same way, so you measure visibility by asking the assistants a fixed set of real buyer questions and recording:
- whether you're named at all,
- where you appear in the list,
- whether your own pages are cited as sources,
- which competitors are named instead.
Because answers vary from run to run, a single check means little. Run the same questions on a schedule and watch the trend.
How Cosmo handles it
Cosmo keeps a list of 20 or so buyer questions for your business ("best scheduling app for diners", "7shifts alternatives" in the Shiftly example) and asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each week. You get a short line in your morning brief when something changes, like "Perplexity now names you in 3 of 10 answers. Last month it was 0."
